In a press conference ahead of the India vs Sri Lanka T20I at Pune, Mahendra Singh Dhoni laid out how the 3 T20s against Sri Lanka will help the Indian Cricket Team prepare for the Asia Cup and the big prize, the World Twenty20.
Dhoni said it was good that the team settled into a routine of playing T20s ahead of the World Twenty20 with even the Asia Cup being played in the shortest format of the game this year.
T20 has it's own requirements and the matches against Sri Lanka would give them time to settle into a groove - for the batsmen to express themselves and bowlers to get their own gameplans in place.
The wins in Australia have meant that the pressure will be low but as he has previously said, the expectations never fall - India are always expected to win their games, especially at home.
Asked about Suresh Raina batting up the order in Australia, he said no.4 is the position where Raina will bat in the World Twenty20 and that is the position he needs to get exposure at. With Shikhar, Rohit and Virat firing the way they are and India playing the little amount of T20Is that it does, it is important that Raina gets the time to learn the requirements of that position in international cricket and gets used to it.
He said the outcome of the Pune game will depend on the conditions on the night. India won a T20I previously played here, against England in 2012 and lost an ODI, against Australia in 2013.
The pitch earlier had a low bounce and but over the years it has settled. With shortish straight boundaries and dew a possible factor thanks to the open ground, it could be a high scoring game.
Dhoni said the team was more or less settled but added that the new players must grab responsibility to seal their slots. A slower pitch could see Pawan Negi replace Hardik Pandya, who is a handy option as a seam bowling allrounder and the options also give Dhoni cover for injuries.
Finally, the Indian captain said that though winning is always a target whenever the team steps out to play, they will also be trying to ensure that the first XI maintains fitness through the series, doesn't pick  up any injuries and is available to play in the two big series coming up.
